Halloween Haunt Mazes

Fall is here and that means Halloween is right around the corner.  Halloween means it is time for some fun and spooky fun that for all ages.  What better place to go this October than Adventure Acres?  This place has everything you could want in fall activities that the whole family can enjoy.

A path in the Halloween Haunt maze.

Haunted Acres of Adventure

Founded by Ed Martinek and his family and located in Dayton, Ohio, Adventure Acres is home to the largest corn maze in the entire state.  With four different mazes, they combine for over 8 miles of trails that visitors can investigate.  That's not all; the farm also features a very famous barn that network PBS is planning to shoot some footage of for one of their special broadcasts.  There are also plenty of other activities for the whole family.  The mazes feature more than eight miles of 10-foot high corn stalks that have been cut out to create a design.  If you want to see the work of art in its entirety, then you can go to the top of the watchtower to see the mazes from a top-level view.  If you want to go into the maze to come out victorious, then there are puzzles you can solve involving Sudoku.  Not only do you get the satisfaction or solving the puzzles and getting through the maze, but there is also a chance to win some nice prizes.

Since Halloween is coming up, the maze may be haunted when you go for a visit.  We can't really say what goes on in the mazes at night, but it is sure to give you a good scare.  After all, what good is a fancy corn maze during the Halloween season if it doesn't have its share of spooky spirits and scary monsters.  Visitors are advised to venture into the haunted mazes at their own risk, because no one knows what might be lurking behind those ears of corn.

Other Activities

In addition to the corn mazes, there are plenty of other activities for people that visit Adventure Acres.  For instance, there is a very popular barn that can be found on the land.  It is so popular, in fact, that PBS is going to film the barn to include in one of their upcoming TV specials.  After taking a closer look at the barn, you can your family can head to the pumpkin patch where you can purchase pumpkins or pick out your own from the patch.  This is a very fun activity, especially for young children.  If you have little kids or babies, you can get a great photo of them next to a pumpkin that is probably the same size as they are.  Older kids and adults will be able to have fun with the corn cannons.  You might ask yourself what a corn cannon is, but it's really straightforward.  It's a cannon that shoots corn.  Using compressed air, the cannons are able to shoot an ear of corn up to 500 feet.  You can aim for the target or just see how car you can get an ear of corn to fly.  If you've never seen corn fly like this, then you are in for a treat.

A fun thing to do at night on the Adventure Acres farm is to take a hayride.  The hayrides are available throughout the day, but things get really spooky at night, which makes them all the more fun.  The hayride lasts abut 30 minutes and winds around the farm's 63 acres and over a stream.  The hayride takes passengers to a clearing in the woods where they can roast marshmallows over a fire under a very large tree.  Riders can also catch a glimpse of the wild turkeys and deer that tend to roam around the woods on the farm.  Riders are cautioned to take the hayride at their own risk because many believe that the hayride is, in fact, haunted.  This cannot be proven nor denied as there have been reports or spooks and specters floating around out there.  Just be careful not to disturb the spirits as there is no telling what they might do.

Making a Corn Maze

Corn mazes do not just appear overnight like crop circles.  It takes a lot of work and planning to create a great corn maze.  In order to have a maze ready for the Autumn months, the crop must be planted months in advance, usually sometime in May.  About 20,000 crops should be planted for every acre.  If too much is planted in a spot, then the corn can become overcrowded and really cause problems.  The corn needs to grow to a sufficient height and be strong enough to sustain a maze.  After the corn has grown to where it needs to be, a maze must be cut out from it.  This is where creativity can really shine.  Not anyone can just go into the corn with a weed whacker and expect to make a maze.  The people that design these mazes are very skilled and know what they are doing.  The more creative they are, the better and more unique the maze will end up being.  In order to really appreciate the word that is done to a maze, you have to see it from the air.  The mazes at Adventure Acres have words and designs cut into them that are very elaborate and detailed.
