Corn Maze Games

Summer is over and Fall weather is rolling in.  That means it's time for traditional activities like roaming through pumpkin patches and going on hayrides.  One of the most popular things to do during the weeks leading up to Halloween is to go through a corn maze.  Adventure Acres in Dayton, Ohio features some of the biggest and best corn mazes in the state.

Adventure Acres Corn Maze

The corn mazes at Adventure Acres are truly a sight to behold.  There are a total of four mazes located on the farm and they all range in size.  If you add them all up, there are over eight miles of paths and trails to navigate through.  The fun is trying to figure out where you are going while in the middle of 10-foot high walls of corn.  If you want to see the mazes from a top down view, you can travel up the watchtower for a fantastic photo op.  Going through the maze isn't the only fun part about it.  You can walk through in an effort to find various checkpoints and landmarks along your way.  While making your way through one of the elaborate corn mazes, you will have the chance to solve a number of Sudoku puzzles and other games.  Successfully solving these riddles will give you the chance to walk away with a Nintendo Wii as a prize.  IF you have played the Wii before, then you know how much fun they are.  If you haven't experienced the joy that is the Nintendo Wii, then you are in for a real treat.  A few games of Wii is a great way to wind down after a fun and thrilling day at Adventure Acres.

Before you take on the mazes at Adventure Acres, you should know a little bit about them first.  The mazes are cut out of very large corn fields that have been planted months in advance in order to achieve very tall stalks.  The maze creators must go into the corn fields and cut out a design, which can be a very lengthy process.  But the effort is usually worth it since the farm that the corn maze sits on can benefit from the tourism that the mazes create.  When Fall comes and people are looking for some fun outdoor activities, a corn maze is just the thing.  The corn mazes at Adventure Acres are not your ordinary maze in a corn field.  From the photos available on their website, you can see that a lot of work and creativity has gone into making these mazes some of the best around.  As it gets closer to Halloween, roaming through the state of Ohio's largest corn maze can be one of the funnest things you do during the season.  There are even some scary touches added to the mazes to get people into the spooky spirit of Halloween.

Making the Maze

The creation of a corn maze takes time, effort and preparation.  You can't just go out there and start cutting down stalks of corn.  That would not make for a very good maze.  Ed Martinek and his family started Adventure Acres and created the spectacular corn maze for everyone to enjoy.  It is obvious that he and his family put a lot of hard work into making these mazes.

In order to make a corn maze, you need corn.  Corn must be planted several months in advance, usually sometime during the month of May.  The corn stalks must have time to grow so they can become tall enough and strong enough for a maze.  The corn must also be taken care of properly to keep the stalks from rotting.  About 20,000 plants per acre are planted moderately to keep the corn from bunching together.  When the corn has grown to be the right height and the stalks are durable, a maze can then be cut out.  The quality of the maze depends on the creative imagination of whoever is doing it.  It is easy to see that the people at Adventure Acres really put a lot of thought into the creation of their corn maze.  It is easy to consider the maze as a work of art in addition to being something fun that people of all ages can enjoy.

Other Activities

In addition to traversing the various corn mazes at Adventure Acres, there are many other things that you can do at the farm.  One of the most popular attractions at the farm is the haunted hayride.  Riders will be treated to a trip through the the nearby woods and into a clearing where they can roast hot dogs and marshmallows under the the trees.  The hayride circles the farm's 63 acres and lasts about 30 minutes, passing over the winding creek where riders might see some turkeys or deer roaming around.  Rumor has it that the hayride is haunted and can get a little bit spooky at night.  While there is no visual evidence to prove this, there have been many that claim to have seen ghosts in the woods while on a hayride.  They don't call it a haunted hayride for nothing.

The pumpkin patch is a family-friendly activity that the youngest of children will enjoy.  You have the option to pick out your own pumpkin from the patch or purchase one that has already been selected.  There are also corn cannons, which allow you to fire ears of corn across a field.  You can go for distance or you can aim for the target.  The corn is fired from a powerful air gun that is able to send an ear of corn flying over 500 feet.

Adventure Acres has activities that people of all ages will enjoy.  If you are looking for a great place to take your family this Fall, then check out Adventure Acres and their giant corn maze!
